I had a chance to attend the screening of Hatsune Miku Live in Sapporo in Los Angeles on November 10th. Thanks to Live Viewing Japan who made it possible.
At first I was thinking it would be the same as a stay home experience as the DVD. However, I’m glad that I got a chance to attend. There was a line of Vocaloid fans already in line by the time my guest and I made it to the theater, so we joined them in lieu. Once we got in we sat down and waited and….you guessed it, waited. There seemed to be some technical difficulties with the screen at first, with static snow and then a dead screen that displayed the message “HDMI no signal” which everyone laughed at. This went on for a while, with the show not starting until around 7:30pm.
I was a bit disappointed, but once the show began my mood changed to a better one. As any theatrical showing there was a trailer before the main presentation, and for this one it was L’arc~en~ciel announcing their 20th L’Anniversary LIVE. After ten minutes the main presentation began, and everyone began to cheer for their beloved green-haired idol, Miku.
As the introductory credits came on-screen with the list of Vocaloid seiyuus, an accompanying big cheer from the crowd was followed. They also cheered for the drummer, bass, guitar and keyboard players as they are also part of the group. Once Miku appeared, the people in attendance with glowsticks moved down to the first few rows to join others like-minded Miku fans. I was amazed at how this gave the screening a more live-concert feel as if I were back at Mikunopolis. In some parts I couldn’t tell them apart, which made it even better. Miku had many outfit changes, as I counted seven and saw her in a kimono, gothic outfit, school girl and a cute Chinese short dress with a fan. The audio was great since it was in a theater with surround sound; giving the experience a better feel to it.
Overall, it was a nice show that while doesn’t compare to the Live show, was still a great experience for people who couldn’t be in Japan. Runtime was two hours which meant more songs for everyone to enjoy.
