Remember when comic imprint Top Cow, known for their scantily clad leading female characters (Witchblade, Aphrodite IX, to name a couple) and The Darkness comic-to-game series, was putting out Tomb Raider comics? And Lara Croft actually crossed over with Witchblade and other Top Cow characters? Good times.
Well, good times are here again. Tomb Raider is back in comic form, but this time from the house that’s brought the world The Mask, The Goon and a ton of Star Wars comics, Dark Horse. Tomb Raider: The Beginning is a comic book prequel to the upcoming game reboot. The comic’s written by the game’s lead writer, Rhianna Pratchett, and comes as a bonus with Tomb Raider when pre-ordered at Best Buy stores.
Story-wise, Tomb Raider: The Beginning gives a glimpse at showbiz archaeologist Dr. James Whitman enlisting Captain Conrad Roth and his eccentric crew of the ship The Endurance. Whitman, Roth, and the rest plan to find the lost Japanese kingdom of Yamatai, but find themselves unexpectedly threatened before their expedition can even begin. At 48 pages, Tomb Raider: The Beginning is pretty short, as far as comic book narratives go. That’s pretty much the equivalent of two and a half issues of a Marvel or DC monthly release. On the plus side, The Beginning is going the extra mile by being released in hardcover.
“Whilst penning Lara’s origins story for the game I had lots of ideas about the world she and the other characters inhabited, and the story behind their voyage: it was great to be able to flesh out the world of Tomb Raider and work with the talented team at Dark Horse to bring Lara Croft back to comics,” said Rhianna Pratchett, lead game writer for Tomb Raider.
