Yesterday brought some updates on the American Oldboy remake, and today we have news of another adaptation in the making.
All You Need is Kill, based on the light novel of the same name, will be coming to theaters March 14, 2014 from Warner Bros. Pictures. With its release more than a year away, anyone interested in reading the source material will have plenty of time to do so.
Described as a sci-fi thriller, All You Need is Kill takes place in a not-too-distant future where a hive-like alien race known as “Mimics” has ravaged the earth, killing millions. Much like Independence Day, the remaining military of the world decide to join forces to stop the alien menace once and for all.
In the middle of all this stands Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Keiji Kiriya in the light novel), played by Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible). Cage is put on the front lines without any combat experience. After coming into contact with the aliens, he winds up in a Groundhog Day-esque time loop of terror, as he must relive the same battle over and over again. With each passing, repeated battle, Cage becomes more skilled and more experienced at combating the aliens. Kind of like playing an arcade game and getting the “Continue?” option, but without the countdown or the loss of quarters.
The film will also star Emily Blunt (Looper) as Rita Vrataski, a special agent known for killing more of the alien invaders than anyone.
Principal photography on the film started yesterday, with Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) directing.
