With the live-action Iron Man 3 coming out this summer, a host of new armor being introduced in the comics, and now a new Iron Man anime being produced by Madhouse, it looks like 2013 just might be the Year of the Iron Man.
This new film, entitled Iron Man: Rise of Technovore, has Tony Stark going against the son of the late Obadiah Stane, the villain from the first Iron Man film. The official synopsis also mentions Stark will be on the run from S.H.I.E.L.D. after Ezekial, Obadiah’s son, sets him up for a fall.
Fans of the comic may find that this sounds familiar and follows closely after the “Five Nightmares” arc written by Matt Fraction in the Iron Man comic. In the comic, Ezekial Stane comes off as a big league threat to not only Iron Man, but all of Stark Industries, as he uses suicide bombers and his own customized armor to go to war against the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist. And after the company-wide Civil War event, Stark is ousted as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and becomes a wanted man, having to outmaneuver Norman Osborn and his H.A.M.M.E.R. crew in a global manhunt. Based on the synopsis, it sounds like the film will be a melding of these two stories, minus the whole Civil War and Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. thing.
The poster for the series features not only Iron Man, but War Machine, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and (surprisingly) the Punisher. Hawkeye and Widow make sense since S.H.I.E.L.D is involved. But the Punisher? It’ll be interesting to see how he plays into all this.
Madhouse previously released a 12-episode Iron Man-based anime back in 2010, around the same time as the release of Iron Man 2, along with anime based on other Marvel properties. With more info being announced at this weekend’s New York Comic-Con, can we look forward to learning of a new wave of Marvel anime hitting the airwaves?
