Disney Sets Up New Exhibit at Epcot to Explore History Behind ‘Anime’ Characters

Ever wondered about the history of anime characters and why Japanese folklore is full of rich fantastical creatures? Well, I have too and thankfully, Disney has decided to answer the call. However, instead of Los Angeles, it’s in Florida’s Epcot Center. Which is like Disneyland, except not as fun…but I digress.

The new attraction at the Japan Pavilion at Epcot, entitled Spirit Beasts: From Ancient Stories to Anime Stars, features some of the mythological creatures such as the moon rabbit, kappa, saru and my personal favorite the kitsune.

Showing the connection between the historic and contemporary, the exhibits feature some of most prevalent characters from video games and TV shows. For those of you who don’t live in Florida, Project Manager Wyatt Winter has stated that he expects it to be on display for several years so be sure to book a trip to Florida some time.

Although it remains to be seen on whether or not this is just a ploy to capitalize on the current anime trend in America, it’s nice to see Disney include something relevant to Otaku interests in their parks for once. Here’s hoping for a Ghibli exhibit next. Au~
